At two years old, Svyatoslav (nicknamed Svyato) had never seen a mirror. The first time he sees one, he thinks it’s a pane of glass behind which lies a potential playmate. Following this discovery, Svyato goes through all the first stages of self-recognition. We eventually find out that Svyato is the direc- tor’s son and that his nickname means “sacred.” “Moving and ruthless at the same time...the film incorporates the poetic and melancholic afflatus typical to Russian culture with the impassive, sci- entific rigor of Western rationalism.” (Fabrizio Colamartino)
