COMPETITION PESARO NUOVO CINEMA 2018 The Lino Miccichè Award for Best Film (...)
2012 Highlights
This year, the Pesaro Film Festival, directed by Giovanni Spagnoletti, flanks its traditional sections (the Pesaro New Cinema Competition – Lino Miccichè Award and the Italian premieres of Cinema in the Square) and a tribute to the 40th anniversary of the Oberhausen Manifesto of the directors of the New German Cinema, including Alexander Kluge and Edgar Reitz, with a look at contemporary Italy through both a complete retrospective on Nanni Moretti and a wide selection of documentaries analyzing the country’s most recent events. The 2012 Festival will thus be dedicated in large part to Italian cinema with a substantial, and for the first time this organic, focus on documentary filmmaking, which lately has become Italian filmmakers’ most fertile terrain for experimentation.
Documentary cinema today: A reflection of Italy
We wish to depict Italy, both politically and socially, through the lens of cinema vérité; through films that in recent years have contributed to reflecting life in our country, paying particular attention to innovations in style and content.
During the Festival, Pesaro will be an important meeting point for audiences as well as the filmmakers themselves, as a “States-General” of sorts on documentary filmmaking that will also be attended by leading documentary associations, including Doc/it.
As is customary, the Festival will produce a documentary of the interviews and cinematic contributions of all the filmmakers comprising the retrospective and publish an in-depth volume, edited by Giovanni Spagnoletti, on the central theme (“A Reflection of Italy”) as well as a broader look at Italian documentary filmmaking, with detailed analyses of production methods, distribution outlets and the current “brain drain” of Italian directors working abroad. Naturally, we will also examine documentary styles and forms, and not only content.
Nanni Moretti
The 26th Special Event on Italian cinema, organized with Cinecittà Luce and Fondazione Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia – Cineteca Nazionale, is dedicated to the films of Nanni Moretti, a particularly important director in Italian cinema who will speak at the Festival in a discussion-interview with Bruno Torri and Vito Zagarrio as the retrospective’s closing event.
The Special Event will be an occasion to see Moretti’s little-known first films, shot in Super 8 (the medium-length La sconfitta, Paté de bourgeois and Come parli frate?), as well as the restored version of his debut feature, I Am Self Sufficient (Io sono un autarchico).
The tribute (featuring reprinted and restored films) will be accompanied by the monograph Nanni Moretti. Il cinema, i film, edited by Vito Zagarrio, with contributions from critics, historians and essayists of various generations.
