FIGHT BACK, FIGHT AIDS: 15 YEARS OF ACT UP

When the AIDS virus began to spread rapidly in the 1980s, it was thought that the disease was linked primarily to homosexuality. At the same time, the large pharmaceutical companies found a profitable market thanks to the costs of the tests and medicine. Founded in 1987, ACT UP (AIDS Coalition to Unleash Power) contributed decisively to changing attitudes and increasing the knowledge and public awareness of AIDS. Wentzy was the first filmmaker to chronicle, through an archive of videos, the ravages of AIDS on the American populace. Here, he also documents the ACT UP movement’s first 15 years of activity, and bears witness to the continued need to inform people about this delicate issue.
