In the small New York apartment that he shares with his wife, original and talented musician Leeward writes songs with homemade instruments, using their young daughter’s toys. Lilas, a young French videomaker, drags her suitcase among artists’ squats and fashionable galleries in the hopes of breaking into the difficult, exclusive world of contemporary art. A chance encounter between Leeward and Lilas could be what they each need to achieve their dreams. Mixing surrealism, unique characters, art and magic tricks, Swim Little Fish Swim is a dreamlike journey from childhood to adulthood.
French directors Lola Bessis (Paris, 1989) and Ruben Amar (Montpellier, 1974) divide their time between New York and Paris. After studying in London, from 2007-2010 Amar made six short films that were very well received at leading international festivals. Bessis, who shot her first short at the age of 14, studied in London and New York. A couple in real life as well, Bessis and Amar met in 2009 and the following year made Checkpoint, which was shot on the Israeli-Palestinian border and played at over 100 festivals worldwide. Swim Little Fish Swim marks the feature debut for both. Lola Bessis, who was 21 at the time of shooting, also makes her acting debut here, in the role of Lilas.
