An Italian circus comes to Syria but it’s unlikely it has ever been to Rimini. Instead of bringing the children joy, the audience has to witness a lion mangle an animal trainer. People are used to bombs, not fireworks, and Fellini is far away. The ‘vita’ is not ‘dolce’ in Syria, Federico! The circus is boring. And I miss you. I forgot to tell you this earlier: ‘Lion’ in Arabic is ‘Al Assad’”.

Ammar Al-Beik (Damasco, Syria, 1972) is a visual artist and film- maker living in Berlin. His films have screened in numerous in- ternational festivals, including Venice, Locarno, Rotterdam and Oberhausen. His artwork has shown in diverse exhibits world- wide and is part of public (at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and the MOMA in New York) and private collections.
