A tribute to Mario Monicelli on the centennial of his birth, and Italo Calvino, on the 30th anniversary of his death, whose story “The Adventure of Two Spouses” was the basis for “Renzo e Luciana” (just as Big Deal on Madonna Street was based on Calvino’s “Theft in a Pastry Shop”), the first act in the quartet of episodes that comprise Boccaccio ’70 (along with Federico Fellini’s “Le tentazioni del dottor Antonio”, Luchino Visconti’s “Il lavoro” and “La riffa” by Vittorio De Sica). The story of hope, illusions and injustices of the economic boom is told through a day in the life of a young couple that meets fleetingly: Renzo is a night watchman while Luciana works during the day.
