In the slums on the outskirts of Rome, Vittorio "Accattone" Cataldi makes a living as a pimp to his girlfriend Maddalena. When she is arrested, Accattone is left penniless. He falls in love with the young Stella and decides to find a job, unsuccessfully. Pasolini’s debut feature and the first film in Italy to be banned to minors under 18. The Assistant Director on the film was a 20- year-old Bernardo Bertolucci.

"Pier Paolo Pasolini was discovering how to use a tracking shot, his slow panning shots on close-ups, the rough quality of a cer- tain type of acting. It was moving for me to watch Pier Paolo’s in- ventions. During the dailies I felt like I was experiencing the origins of cinema, like I was seeing the first tracking shot, the first panning shot.” Bernardo Bertolucci
