SETTE OPERE DI MISERICORDIA

Romanian adolescent Luminita is an undocumented immigrant living in Italy on the fringes of a shantytown. The girl has a plan for escape her difficult situation and turns to Antonio, a sick, elderly and dying man, to help her carry it out. Their initial clash will lead to unexpected consequences.

“In we lived in a francophone country, where passion for cinema is still intense, we could compare the De Serio brothers’ feature debut to the Dardennes’ The Promise. [...] Because this reinterpretation of the Christian works of mercy is not in the least bit religious. Rather, it contains so much of that cinema that probes the depths of the human soul tout court. [...] It is a cinema of gestures, gazes, more of silence than words.”
